It runs along the southern flank of the West End, from the busy sand of English Bay down to the mouth of False Creek under the Burrard Bridge, and it is the reason you can walk or cycle from Stanley Park to the head of the creek without once leaving public land. It is broader and calmer than its famous neighbour: long lawns above a modest strip of sand, a small ferry dock, an off-leash area for dogs, and a slope carrying the city&#8217;s AIDS memorial. The name is literal \u2014 the beach faces west across English Bay and the sun sets straight down it \u2014 and it was chosen by residents in the 1970s when they campaigned to keep the shoreline out of developers&#8217; hands. The Squamish name for this shore is \u00cd7iy\u0313el\u0313shn, &#171;soft underfoot&#187;.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Vancouver AIDS Memorial<\/strong> \u2014 a ribbon of twenty weathering-steel panels on concrete piers, winding down the slope towards the water, engraved with the names of nearly 800 British Columbians who died of AIDS beneath a line from the philosopher George Santayana. Designed by Bruce Wilson from more than seventy submissions and unveiled in time for Pride in 2004 after a decade of fundraising.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The False Creek Ferries dock<\/strong> \u2014 small round-bottomed boats leave from here for Granville Island, Yaletown, Vanier Park and the head of False Creek. The Granville Island crossing takes only a few minutes and is the most enjoyable public transport in the city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>217.5 Arc x 13<\/strong> \u2014 Bernar Venet&#8217;s monumental rusted steel arc on the grass above the beach, a Vancouver Biennale work that has become one of the most recognizable objects on this stretch of the seawall.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The uninterrupted seawall<\/strong> \u2014 this is the joining piece: north into English Bay Beach and Stanley Park, south and east under the bridge and around False Creek, all of it separated into walking and cycling lanes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The lawns<\/strong> \u2014 a genuinely large flat green above the sand, which is why the city stages its biggest open-air gatherings here, from free Vancouver Symphony Orchestra concerts to fireworks nights.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The view west<\/strong> \u2014 open water to the Strait of Georgia, freighters at anchor, and the North Shore mountains framing the right-hand side. Sunset here is less crowded than at English Bay Beach and every bit as good.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Sunset Beach is a working neighbourhood park rather than a resort beach: locals outnumber visitors, dogs outnumber sunbathers in winter, and most of the ground is lawn rather than sand. It is also the most flexible open space on the downtown peninsula, which is why the city keeps putting events on it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Supervised swimming in season<\/strong> \u2014 in 2026 lifeguards covered this beach from 16 May to 7 September, with the swim area flagged from noon to 8 p.m.<\/li>\n<li><strong>An off-leash dog area<\/strong> \u2014 one of the few on this shoreline, and the reason the park stays busy through the rainy months.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beach volleyball and open lawn<\/strong> \u2014 courts on the sand and enough flat grass for picnics, frisbee, yoga classes and impromptu football.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Concession and washrooms<\/strong> \u2014 seasonal food service near the beach, with the West End&#8217;s caf\u00e9s and restaurants a short walk uphill.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A ferry connection, not just a view<\/strong> \u2014 the dock makes this a transport interchange as well as a park; you can arrive on foot along the seawall and leave by boat across the creek.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Event infrastructure<\/strong> \u2014 power, access and space for large public gatherings, which is why the shoreline here is at the centre of the city&#8217;s summer calendar even when the main festival stage is elsewhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Walkers and cyclists<\/strong> \u2014 use it as the hinge of a long seawall route: Stanley Park and English Bay to the north, False Creek and Granville Island to the south, with a coffee stop in between.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dog owners<\/strong> \u2014 the off-leash area with a sea view, busy every morning and evening regardless of weather.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Families and picnickers<\/strong> \u2014 soft lawn rather than crowded sand, room to spread out, and a ferry ride as the reward for good behaviour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sunset watchers who dislike crowds<\/strong> \u2014 the same westward view as English Bay Beach, several hundred metres of shoreline to choose from, and far less competition for space.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anyone travelling to Granville Island<\/strong> \u2014 the ferry from this dock is quicker, cheaper in effort and much more scenic than going around by land.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visitors interested in the city&#8217;s queer history<\/strong> \u2014 the AIDS memorial on the slope, and the West End&#8217;s Davie Village district immediately uphill, the historic heart of LGBTQ Vancouver.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park occupies the southwestern waterfront of the West End on the downtown peninsula, between English Bay and the Burrard Bridge. Bus route 6 runs through the West End to within a couple of minutes of the sand, and routes 5 and 19 serve the neighbourhood a short walk uphill. On SkyTrain, Burrard Station on the Expo Line is about fifteen minutes away on foot, and Yaletown\u2013Roundhouse Station on the Canada Line is a similar distance on the other side of the creek \u2014 from there, the False Creek Ferries will bring you across to the park&#8217;s own dock. The seawall arrives directly from both directions. The park is free, unfenced and open at all hours; there is no admission for the beach, the lawns, the memorial or the sculptures. The False Creek Ferries and the Aquatic Centre facilities are separately priced. One important change: the Vancouver Aquatic Centre, which stood at the edge of this park from 1974, closed permanently on 28 June 2026. The building was seismically obsolete and had suffered a partial collapse of an exterior wall near its main entrance in March 2022; demolition and construction of a roughly $170-million replacement \u2014 with a 25-metre lap pool, a diving tank, a leisure pool, a hot pool and a sauna \u2014 are expected to begin in late 2026, funded largely by a $103-million borrowing that Vancouver voters approved in the October 2022 plebiscite. Until the new facility opens, there is no indoor pool at Sunset Beach. Parking nearby is paid and limited; transit, bicycle or ferry is much easier. Allow an hour for a walk-through, an evening if you are staying for the sunset.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Summer<\/strong> is when the park does the most work: July and August are dry and warm, lifeguards are on duty, the ferries run at their densest, the lawns fill with picnics, and the beach becomes a prime viewing point for anything happening over the bay \u2014 in 2026 the free fireworks show Summer Lights in English Bay drew the shoreline crowd on 31 July, and the Pride parade passed along this waterfront corridor on 2 August. <strong>Autumn<\/strong> hands the park back to the neighbourhood: by late September the lifeguards have gone, the light turns low and gold across the water, and the lawns are empty enough for long walks. <strong>Winter<\/strong> is wet and mild, rarely freezing, and this is one of the best places in the city to watch a storm roll up English Bay with the mountains disappearing behind the rain; the off-leash area stays busy in all of it. <strong>Spring<\/strong> arrives early \u2014 blossom in the West End streets from March, the ferries stepping back up to full frequency, and by May the lawns are in use again. For the best of both, aim for late May or the first half of September, when the weather is settled and the crowds are not.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This shoreline was industrial and semi-private for much of Vancouver&#8217;s early history, and the park exists because the city deliberately stitched a gap shut. Sunset Beach Park was established in 1959, completing a continuous strip of public waterfront running from Stanley Park all the way to the head of False Creek \u2014 a piece of long-range planning that shaped how the whole peninsula is used today. The name came later and from below: in the 1970s local residents petitioned to keep the open shore out of development and christened it Sunset for the west-facing view, and the name stuck officially. The Squamish name for the shore, \u00cd7iy\u0313el\u0313shn, translates as &#171;soft underfoot&#187;. In 1974 the Vancouver Aquatic Centre opened at the park&#8217;s eastern edge and became the West End&#8217;s indoor pool for half a century; built to pre-1973 standards, it aged badly, lost part of an exterior wall near the entrance in March 2022, and closed for good on 28 June 2026 ahead of demolition and a replacement facility. The park&#8217;s most significant piece of public memory arrived in 2004. After a decade of fundraising and a design competition that drew more than seventy entries, Bruce Wilson&#8217;s Vancouver AIDS Memorial was unveiled in time for Pride: twenty rusted steel panels anchored to concrete piers, running down the slope towards the water, engraved with the names of nearly 800 British Columbians who died of AIDS, under a line by George Santayana. The park&#8217;s relationship with Pride is longer than that memorial. For years the Pride Festival&#8217;s main open-air site was here at Sunset Beach, drawing tens of thousands after the parade; the finale then moved, to a site near Science World in 2023 and 2024, and back into the neighbourhood in 2025 and again in 2026 as the Davie Village Pride Festival, with Nelson Park and the Davie Village district taking the crowd on 2 August 2026. The Pride Society cited rising costs of security and civic fees for the changes. Sunset Beach still sits directly on the parade&#8217;s waterfront corridor, and it remains one of the city&#8217;s main venues for free outdoor concerts, symphony performances and fireworks viewing. One more episode belongs to this beach and refuses to be forgotten: on 15 November 2021, during the atmospheric-river storm that flooded much of southern British Columbia, a 61-metre barge broke its moorings and drove ashore here. It sat on the sand for months, acquired an affectionate unofficial nickname, generated songs, memes and merchandise, and was finally cut up and removed by October 2022 at a cost of about $2.4 million. Nothing else in the park&#8217;s history has done more for its name recognition.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the ferry rather than walking around. From the park&#8217;s dock the crossing to Granville Island takes only a few minutes and saves a long detour over the bridge \u2014 and it is the cheapest boat ride with a skyline view you will find.<\/li>\n<li>Do not plan a swim at the Aquatic Centre. It closed permanently on 28 June 2026, and the replacement facility is not expected to be under construction until late 2026; the nearest outdoor pool in season is at Second Beach in Stanley Park.<\/li>\n<li>For sunset, walk south along the lawns away from English Bay Beach.
