A recipe made of nothing but generic ingredients, or a forecast that predicts happiness and success, is a gimmick with no person inside it, and she will see that immediately. What stops it feeling like a shortcut is one concrete detail she recognizes as hers: the habit she denies having, the sentence she says every time. Put that in the middle of the shape and the shape stops being decoration. The other safeguard is the ending — almost every text above closes on something meant plainly, and that final line is what tells her the effort was real.

How do you keep a list or a recipe about your sister and not about sisters in general?

A format hands you a fixed number of slots, and the instinct is to fill them evenly. Do the opposite. Decide which slot carries the weight and let the others stay light: in a five-point list the first two can be ordinary, because they set the rhythm, and the line only she would recognize goes fourth or fifth, by which point she is reading in the pattern and it arrives without ceremony. Recipes behave the same way, with generic ingredients and one step in the method that describes something she actually does. Load every slot with a private reference and the shape collapses into a run of in-jokes; load none and you have a template with a heading on it.

Which shape suits which sister, and how do you tell before you write it?

Match the format to how she handles attention. A sister who deflects anything sincere is well served by a list or a set of instructions, because the humour gives her somewhere to look while the real sentence goes past. A sister who keeps cards in a drawer should get the letter she opens next year, since it is the one shape that gets read twice. The forecast and the recipe sit in the middle and suit almost anyone, which makes them the safe pick. Questions are the riskiest, because they ask her to do something on her own birthday, so keep those for a sister you talk to often.

What do you do when the format runs out halfway and you have three good points but need five?

Stop at three. These shapes are elastic, and a numbered list is the one place where padding cannot be hidden, because the reader is counting along with you. If you want more length, widen the axis instead of adding items: a forecast can cover mornings, afternoons and evenings rather than twelve months, and a recipe can be ingredients only. The other rescue is to change shape mid-draft — three points that refuse to become five usually work as a short letter, where nothing has to be counted. What never works is filling the empty slots from an ordinary card. The join between a real line about her and a borrowed one is visible from a distance.

Does a wish written as a list survive being read out loud, or is it only a page thing?

It reads aloud better than ordinary paragraphs do, as long as you respect the shape while speaking. Numbered points give a room something to follow, and the pause before each one supplies the timing a speaker would otherwise have to produce alone. Two adjustments are worth making. Cut to four points, since spoken aloud a list runs much longer than it looks on the page. And say the numbers; drop them and the whole thing reverts to a paragraph, with the audience losing the thread. The forecast and the instructions carry particularly well in a room. The letter for next year does not — it is addressed to one person, and reading it aloud changes who it belongs to.

Every year the same thing happens.
