This transition led to a leadership overhaul, with many executives replaced. Construction then continued under new management.

By the late 1960s, the dam complex was completed. Since then, it has supplied electricity across British Columbia, including Vancouver and its surrounding areas. The filling of the reservoir caused the submersion of several local rivers, creating the largest artificial lake in the world.

Impact on Local Populations

The flooding of lands to create the reservoir had a devastating impact on the Ingenika tribe, which consisted of 125 families residing in nearby valleys. Forced to relocate, they were moved hundreds of kilometres to the developing mining town of Mackenzie.

Although the tribe received a compensation of $35,000, the displacement had catastrophic consequences. Most Ingenika members, unfamiliar with English, faced difficulties adapting to their new environment. Many eventually returned to their original territory, settling on rocky outcroppings above the waterline. They lived there for two decades before being rediscovered by the government.

Stephen Rogers, a provincial minister, described their living conditions as “the most primitive he had ever witnessed.”

Many Ingenika members later relocated to Vancouver, where they often faced dire financial and housing conditions, leading to shorter life spans for most.

In 2006, the Ingenika tribe received additional financial compensation.

In October 2008, the Kwadacha Nation entered into an agreement with the government for damages caused by the dam’s construction. The agreement included a one-time payment of $15 million and annual payments exceeding $1.5 million.

The Legacy of the Bennett Dam

The Bennett Dam remains a landmark achievement in hydroelectric engineering and was the largest hydroelectric project of its era. Its construction employed thousands of workers, fueling the industrial growth of Vancouver and its surrounding areas for decades.

While it brought significant benefits to British Columbia, the dam’s history is also a testament to the profound social and cultural impact on local Indigenous communities, emphasizing the complexities and trade-offs of large-scale infrastructure projects.

The Bennett Dam, known as one of the largest hydroelectric stations in Canada, writes vancouver-name.
